The Clean Air Act requires certain states to conduct vehicle inspections to control vehicle emissions and help meet national air quality standards. In 1996, Ohio began its vehicle emissions testing program called E-Check, to identify vehicles that emit excessive levels of air pollutants.

It’s mandatory for all vehicles more than 4 years old and up to 25 years old. But, not every vehicle owner in Ohio has to get an E-check inspection, only those residing in the following seven counties:

  • Cuyahoga
  • Geauga
  • Portage
  • Lake
  • Lorain
  • Summit
  • Medina

E-Check county residents that purchase multi-year registrations must continue to comply with the regular biennial E-Check requirements. Motorcycles, motorhomes, recreational vehicles, historical and collector’s vehicles and those weighing over 10,000 pounds GVWR are permanently exempt from the E-Check program. But have to get a one-time visual inspection by Ohio EPA Mobile Source field staff.
