A driver licenses is the official state document (card) which validates an individuals right to operate a motor vehicle legally; a state ID card is an official identification document (card), usually requiring the individual to be a resident of the state in which it is issued.
State residents may have a driver's license or a state ID card, an individual may not have both.

In order to receive a state ID card from your local DMV, you will generally need to provide the following information:

  • Complete and legal name and the individual's age.
  • Proof of lawful presence in the U.S. (which may include a U.S. Birth certificate, a certification of citizenship, a Veteran's Association card, and many other options).
  • Proof of identity (includes many of the above documents, but also licenses or state ID cards expired within 10 years of the application date, or a parent's affidavit if the individual is younger than 21 years of age)
  • Social security number or equivalent and proof of residence (a physical address)
