Why Registration is Important
Properly registering your car is a must if you want to be able to drive it on Maryland’s highways, streets, and roads. A vehicle without current, valid tags is not considered roadworthy and cannot be lawfully driven.
How to Get New Vehicle Registration in Maryland
Registering your vehicle for the first time is easy with eTags, and here we’ll show you how to get your new registration fully online from the convenience of any Wi-Fi enabled device.
1. Head over to our homepage, select Maryland as your state from our pop-up menu, choose New Registration, and then click Continue.
2. On the next panel, choose the type of service that best suits your registration needs. If you already have a Maryland title in your name, select one of the top two options, which will be:
- New Plates and Registration – if you need a new set of license plates.
- Transfer Tag – if you have a current, valid Maryland pate in your name and want to transfer it to your new vehicle.
If the title to your car is not yet in your name, you can click the third option to transfer your title and get new registration at the same time. After you’ve made your choice, click Next.

3. Enter your VIN (vehicle identification number). This can be found on the title, on the driver’s side windshield near the dashboard, and sometimes on the lower outer frame of the driver’s seat.
4. Confirm your vehicle’s information. Here you’ll see the year and the make that correspond to the VIN you entered. If this looks good, you can proceed. Otherwise, hit Back to return to the previous screen and correct the VIN so that it pulls up the right vehicle.
5. Provide your contact information. You’ll need both a working email address and mobile phone number here.
6. Specify if the vehicle owner is an individual or company, and then fill in the spaces below with the necessary details. For an individual, please provide the first and last name. For a business, please write the company’s full legal name.
7. Enter your shipping address. You may be asked to confirm you address if you’ve entered it differently from what the USPS has on file. Please review this and either click Next, or make any needed changes by clicking Back.

8. You’ve reached your summary page. Now’s the time to look over your order and ensure that all the details are correct. You’ll be able to edit your personal and vehicle information by either clicking Edit Order or Edit Contact Information. If everything seems good, you can scan a breakdown of your charges and proceed by clicking Checkout.
9. On your checkout page you can select your payment method:
- a) Credit Card
- b) PayPal
Fill in the appropriate details, take a peek at our terms and conditions, and when you’re ready, click Pay. That’s it – you’ve ordered your new registration!
