A name/owner removal from a vehicle title acts almost identically to a conventional title transfer. It will include all the same factors:
- Buyer
- Seller
- Notary Public
- Form BMV 3774
Follow these simple steps to remove a name from an Ohio vehicle title:
Step One.
Gather your documents. You will need:
- The vehicle certificate of title
- Form BMV 3774
- State ID.
Step Two.
A. Sign over the title. This means that the person whose name is remaining on the title will act as the Seller and fill in and sign all the appropriate boxes designated for the seller. The person whose name is being removed from the title will act as the Buyer, filling in and signing as the buyer.
If this removal is occurring between family members and there will be no money exchanged, it can be considered a gift. Write $0 or the word Gift in the space provided for the purchase price.
B. Fill in Form BMV 3774.
Important: All signatures on the title and Form 3774 must be made in the presence of a notary public!
Step Three.
Drive over to an Ohio County Clerk of Courts office in person to complete the transfer. Most branches do not require an appointment, but it’s a good idea to call ahead and confirm this.
