Fuel efficiency not only saves you money on gas, but also makes a better impact on the environment.

The Environmental Protection Agency reported that motor vehicles cause 75% of carbon monoxide pollution in the U.S.

While air pollution is an issue created by excessive dependency on motor vehicles, what are you doing about it?

From planning your route to avoiding traffic jams, you are in charge of making a positive contribution to our planet.

Whether you are a new or an experienced driver, be part of the change and developed green habits.

Below you’ll find 5 green driving tips that will increase your fuel efficiency while saving our planet.

1. Find the best route

Plan your journey every time you need to operate your vehicle. For example, you can search for road updates on your phone and find the best route to your destination.

You could even determine when it is best to leave home for any other destination just to avoid traffic congestion.

Avoid winding roads, bad roads, or any other routes that increases the number of stops, affecting your fuel consumption.

2. Avoid pressing on the accelerator abruptly

The more you press on the accelerator, the more you’ll exhaust the engine and the more fuel you’ll burn.

That’s definitely not efficient. If you must accelerate, do it gradually and avoid sudden stops by anticipating stops.

Pressing the gas pedal slowly and with little pressure reduces the amount of fuel waste, which is a saving for you.

3. Idling the engine is wasteful

Unless it is terribly cold outside, avoid warming up or idling the engine excessively. You don’t need that much time to get on the right temperature.

It goes without saying that unnecessary idling burns a lot of gas.

Warm up your engine while you are driving, and turn off your engine when sitting on traffic for more than 10 seconds.

4. Keep a consistent speed

Be consistent when adjusting your speed. Use cruise control to keep a consistent speed, avoid fluctuations, and save on gas.

When driving uphill or downhill, press on the gas pedal conservatively. If you keep on braking and accelerating, you’ll be adding more pressure to the engine.

It can be hard at the beginning, especially when you are overly braking owing to your lack of experience. For that reason, it is always advisable to slow down until you succeed.

5. Stay away from traffic jams

Once you are stuck in traffic, your engine idling time and the number of stops increases significantly.

Use your smartphone to access apps that can give you alternate routes and traffic updates. These apps provide real-time updates which can improve your driving experience.

You could even avoid driving during rush hour by leaving home earlier or leaving work at a time where the roads are less crowded.
