In addition to all the other types of things you have to do before, during, and after a move, updating your address with the West Virginia Department of Transportation is important to make sure documents like your license and registration show the updated information. You are required to notify the DoT within 20 days of an address change. If you update your address with the USPS, this does not automatically update with the DMV and failure to do so in the required time period could result in a fine or even imprisonment.
In order to change the address information for your driver's license, you must print and fill out the DMV-98-TRB form. You will be required to enter your new address, license number, the last four of your social security number, date of birth, full name, and vehicle information. Once complete, you will need to mail the form AND a copy of your driver's license or ID card to:
WV DMV Records Section
PO Box 17150
Charleston, WV 25317
For license renewals and duplicate requests, you must provide proof of residency.
Moving can prove stressful on you and your wallet. You can check lower automobile insurance rates just before or after your move to see if you could save and get better coverage. Those who compare auto insurance quotes can save over $400 a year. If you are interested in seeing what offers are available in your area, enter your new zip code in the box at the top of the page.
