Things happen, accidents happen, and every effort you make to improve your driving helps you become more aware of what really matters: Your safety.

In other words, there’s always room for improvements and that’s backed by car experts and driving instructors.

All you need to do is polish your driving skills in order to protect yourself from potential road dangers. For that reason, here are 5 driving tips to improve your driving right now.

#1 Go back to the basics

Remember those days when you were a novice trying to maneuver the steering wheel while following the advices from your driving instructor.

You were probably concerned about making mistakes, driving slowly, acknowledging every road sign, and complying with the basic norms of driving.

Well, that’s exactly that you need to do become a better driver. For instance, when making a left turn, go through the left lane and follow your lane.

That’s part of the law and shows a complete understanding of your duty as a driver.

#2 Always check your mirrors

It is a good practice especially when you share your vehicle with your spouse or someone else who keeps altering your mirror view.

Adjust your side and rear mirrors so you could see the edges of your vehicle, covering your blind spots as much as possible for your own safety.

More importantly, once you adjust your mirrors use them so you could at least know what’s going on around you prior to making any move.

#3 Don’t let high beams block your view

At night you may encounter drivers on the opposite side of the road blocking your view with their high beams.

It could be annoying when they don’t dim their lights but you could always look at the right side of the road and follow the colored edge line.

It’s worth pointing out that drivers who don’t dim their lights show rudeness and disrespect for other people’s right to drive safe.

#4 Keep your eyes looking everywhere

Staring at one spot is a common mistake some drivers, either novice or experienced, make when hitting the road.

If you are driving on the highway, it’s not enough to just look at the vehicle in front of you. Check your rear-view and side-view mirrors for 5 seconds to scan all the vehicle that are around you.

You could also look further down to see whether there’s any congestion ahead and predict your next move.

#5 Manage the road space around your car

You are advised to keep a prudent distance between your car and the car in front. Expert drivers suggest that at least a 4-second distance is a safe decision to put in practice.

Avoid terrible habits such as tailgating or simply driving too close because you won’t be giving yourself enough room in case you need to make a sudden stop.

Try to keep your distance by adjusting your speed and positioning your vehicle in a way that it could easily communicate with other vehicles.
