In-Person Registration Renewal Process
You can renew your New York car, truck, motorcycle, or SUV registration at the DMV by following these steps:
- Set up an appointment with the New York DMV.
- Bring your license, registration, and renewal notice (MV-3 or OP-3) to the appointment.
- Meet with the DMV staff and fill out the registration renewal form they provide.
The above steps only apply when you already have a recent renewal notice on hand. If you don’t have your renewal notice or if some of the information on it is wrong, you’ll need to complete a vehicle registration/title application form MV-82, and bring it to your DMV appointment.

Renew With the NY DMV Online
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles also has an online renewal system. To use it, you’ll need the following information:
- License plate number
- Vehicle registration class
- Business name or last name of the person on the registration
- A credit card or debit card for paying the renewal fee
Once you have that information handy, visit the DMV website and follow their instructions to complete the renewal.
Online Registration Renewal Exceptions
Some registrations cannot be renewed online. In-person renewal is required for the following vehicles that:
- Require proof of insurance, a tax certificate, or another document
- Have ambulance, New York Press (NYP), government, or official registration
- Weigh over 55,000 lbs.
- Are for hire, such as taxis, buses, and livery vehicles
- Have an apportioned registration issued under the International Registration Plan (IRP)
- Are used as rental cars
- Have been modified or “stretched” to accommodate more passengers
Additionally, if you’re eligible for a no-fee registration, you will need to complete your renewal in-person at the DMV.
Registration Renewal by Mail
If you have your New York renewal notice, you will need to send the bottom part of your registration notice (MV-3 or OP-3) via mail to the DMV. The appropriate mailing address will be on your registration renewal notice. If you‘ve misplaced your notice, you’ll need to use the MV-82 form.
You can mail the forms and payment to: New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, Utica Processing Center PO BOX 359, Utica, NY 13503

A Note for First-Time Registrations
Please note that this article only applies to registration renewals in New York, and not for first-time vehicle registrations. To apply for a new registration in New York, there are several more documents and steps needed, such as a vehicle inspection.

I recently stay in Queens , but billing and registration address is in Suffolk county , if I renew my car registration online , how is the new registration being mailed to my current address ?
When you renew with eTags online, we can ship your paperwork to a different address than what’s on your car registration or registered with the DMV. You’ll have a contact to fill out and a shipping address to submit. These two can be different through our systems.
After I registered on line my new registration license will I get a new registration tag After completion in the mail
Yes, if you ordered your registration from eTags, you’ll get all relevant paperwork by mail to the address you’ve submitted. You can also download your registration if you need it right away
Hi… my registration expired more than a year , how do i register again or where to send my documents by mail ?
Hey there, eTags handles registration renewals of up to one year online, so in your case since its more, you’d have to register at the dmv. return your plates and register again.
