Vehicle Registration Renewal Requirements
To renew your registration in Ohio, you must:
- Be no more than 90 days away from your tag expiration dates
- Hold a valid Ohio driver’s license or State of Ohio ID card
- Provide power of attorney documents (for leased vehicles only)
- Carry current, valid insurance policy that meets Ohio’s coverage minimums

In addition to the above, you may also need to complete an emissions inspection, often referred to in Ohio as an “E-Check.” E-Check mandates vary across the state and are a must in the following counties:
- Cuyahoga
- Geauga
- Lake
- Lorain
- Medina
- Portage
- Summit
If you live in a county where E-Checks are required, your vehicle must be tested and pass inspection every two years. However, you may also be eligible for a multi-year registration, which, depending on the county, can last anywhere from two to five years. Check with your local DMV to clarify which type of registration you qualify for.
Auto Insurance Requirements
In order to renew your vehicle registration in the Buckeye State, you will need to have an active car insurance policy with coverage that meets the following minimum requirements:
- $25,000 for injury/death of one person
- $50,000 for injury/death of two or more people
- $25,000 for property damage in an accident

How To Renew Your Vehicle Registration in Ohio
Once you have confirmed that you meet all the above requirements, you’re ready to start the renewal process. Here’s how to renew your vehicle registration in Ohio using each available method:
Ohio Vehicle Registration Renewal Online
To complete your Ohio license plate sticker renewal online, head to the eTags registration renewal page and provide the following information:
- Vehicle information (make, model, year, and vehicle identification number (VIN))
- Your date of birth (or the date of registration for company-owned vehicles)
- The last 4 digits of your social security number
After providing the necessary information, simply follow the step-by-step instructions laid out by our registration renewal tool; it’s quick, and only takes a few minutes to complete. Once your order is approved, your only task is to await your registration stickers and documents which will arrive via USPS.
Renewing Your Ohio Registration at the BMV
If you prefer to renew in person, follow these steps:
- Make an appointment with the BMV: While not required, scheduling an appointment can save you a lot of time.
- Gather all necessary documents: You will need your driver’s license and your renewal notice.
- Provide vehicle information to the BMV employee: When your appointment time comes, hand over your documents to the BMV employee helping you.
- Pay any registration fees: It costs a minimum of $31 to renew your registration in Ohio. Yours may cost more if you have a non-standard license plate. These fees can typically be paid with a debit or credit card.

Ohio Registration Renewal by Mail
To renew your Ohio registration by mail, you must:
- Download and fill out the BMV 4625 form.
- Mail the completed form, your driver’s license, payment for fees, and your renewal notice to your county BMV office.
- Wait one to two weeks for your new stickers and registration slip to arrive.
If you want to renew by mail, it’s a good idea to send in your renewal request at least 60 days before your registration expires. Delays in the mail system can leave your vehicle unregistered and can result in late fees even if you sent the documents before your registration expired.
And there you have it: the various ways to renew your Ohio vehicle registration. If you choose eTags.com, remember that we’ve got a team of experts ready to assist if you need a hand. Because as always, at eTags, we’re here to help!

I sold my house in Ohio and haven’t found a permanent home yet and my license plates expire in June and I am going to Florida for a couple of months help
If you are not planning to establish residence in Florida, you can still renew your your Ohio tags. However, you will have to list an Ohio address on your registration application and you can also list a separate mailing address if you’d like. Visit the OP PLATES section of the OH BMV website to renew online. Best of luck and enjoy your time in the Sunshine State.
Hi.
I am out of state and waiting to get US visa for coming back to Ohio. Would you please kindly let me know how should I apply forvrenew my car title.
Many thanks
If you’re waiting for a visa that probably means you’re out of the country, not just a state. If you are in the state though just at a different address, eTags can renew your Ohio registration and mail it to you in the U.S. A car title requires a transfer if it was assigned to you so you can become the new owner, but a title is not renewed. We hope this clarifies things.
Can I register a car and get plates in a different county then what I live in?
Your registration fees and taxes will be based on the county you live in no matter where you go to register the vehicle. It’ll be based on your address on file with BMV. I hope this helps!
Yeah I put my information in for my tag renewal and it never showed me where I give my debit card information to pay for it. Can someone tell me what’s going on?
Hi Brandon,
I don’t see that an order has been created. This makes sense if you haven’t reached the checkout page. Try placing an order again using this link. After getting to the end, it should prompt you to checkout with your credit or debit card. I hope this helps!
