New York Vehicle Registration Renewal Guide

Our renewal process is simple, straightforward and easy to follow. You will be led through a series of panels and prompts that will ask you to either fill in information and answer a few “yes or no” questions. Here’s how it works:

Head over to our dedicated New York page and click on the “Get Started” button.

1. Select the vehicle owner type. Your selections will be either Individual or Company. From there you will be asked to fill in your own name or the full name of the company, depending on the type of ownership. Please note that for either ownership type, the first and last names must be identical to what is listed on an individual driver’s license or state ID or it must match the name declared on company documents.
2. Provide the license plate number. This too must be exact, as it is the information used to access all the vehicle details from the DMV database.
3. Confirm the vehicle make and year.  This is where you review the data and be sure that the license plate number you provided did indeed result in the correct vehicle. (For example, a 1997 Hyundai.)  As long as you see the details of your car here, you can proceed to the next step.
4. Respond “yes” or “no.” Here you will be asked a series of questions regarding the condition of your vehicle. These “yes or no” questions inquire as to whether the car has been significantly altered, modified, or damaged. It will also ask for the seating capacity, meaning, how many seats are available in the vehicle.
5. Enter your shipping address. This is where you fill the address where you want to receive your registration renewal via mail. This will be followed by a screen asking to confirm that the address is indeed correct. Occasionally, if you’ve entered your street address somewhat differently than what the USPS has on file, you will be asked if you’d like to keep your address as you’ve provided it, or if you’d like to have it conform to what the post office has listed in their database.
6. Confirm your order. Once your shipping address is confirmed, you can then see the full summary of your order, The details here include:

• • Your email address and phone number
  • The year, make, and license plate of the vehicle whose registration you are renewing
  • Your fees, including: NYS renewal fees, eTags service fee, printing/shipping/handling fee, and convenience fee. Your total will be listed very clearly here!

This is also the place to add a second vehicle, if you need to renew a second car. There will be a banner and a button allowing you the option of adding another vehicle for renewal.

As long as everything here looks good, you can proceed to your checkout page by clicking the “Checkout” button. On the checkout page, you will have the chance to review our terms and conditions, as well as to click on the MV-82 form link to complete and electronically sign this state-required document.
