Thunderstorms are quite common in certain areas of the country, mainly during the summer season, where people are always ready to find refuge and avoid being exposed to the effects of mother nature.

If you don’t follow the right precautionary steps, thunderstorms can be a real danger.

While some people take advantage of thunderstorms to curl up on the couch or take a nap, there are others who are still driving and hurrying to reach their destination safely.

In fact, driving in a thunderstorm is a hazardous decision and safety advocates insist that drivers should stay indoors to protect themselves from the impact of nature.

Thunderstorms usually come with lightning that on average causes 57 deaths and more than 300 injuries per year in the United States.

You may think that it is very unlikely to be struck by lightning but, what about the effects that thunderstorms have on the roads?

Like any other adverse weather conditions, driving during thunderstorms affect your visibility leading to a major disaster.

For your own safety, you are advised to drive cautiously regardless of how bad other drivers perform during critical conditions.

The question is: how do you drive safely during a thunderstorm?

Never play against the odds. Remember that the way you drive has an impact on your safety and that should be your main priority.

Here’s a list of precautions you need to take to stay safe while on the road.

Plan your drive by checking on the weather forecast. If a thunderstorm is on its way, leave earlier to reach your destination on time.
Driving during a thunderstorm is a hazardous action that increases the chances of getting involved in a crash. Hence, pull of the road, park on a safe spot, and wait. If you can’t, then drive cautiously.
During a thunderstorm, check your mirrors as debris is going to be everywhere.
Follow the rules and pay attention to your surroundings. It goes without saying that speeding is never an option, so slow down.
Stay calm and be patient. Getting angry or nervous is not going to help you survive adverse weather conditions. Like you, other drivers are also taking their own precautions.
Watch out for aggressive drivers. Irresponsible drivers know best that cops won’t be pulling over cars during adverse weather conditions. Stay away from them and, more importantly, avoid engaging with troublemakers.
Use your common sense make sound decisions that will help you stay away from danger. Remember that it’s better to be late for bad weather conditions than not getting there at all.

All in all, unfavorable weather conditions are dangerous enough to put us in an unsafe situation, but how you perform is what really makes a difference. Watch out!
