What is a Certificate of Title?
A certificate of title is the legal, documented proof of ownership of a vehicle. It clearly states the name and address of the car/truck/SUV/RV owner on the front, along with other details such as make, model, year, and odometer reading of the vehicle.
Why a Certificate of Title is important.
- A vehicle cannot be bought, sold, inherited, or gifted without a current, clean title.
- In any transaction where a vehicle is changing ownership, the title must be transferred (signed over) by the seller to the buyer
- Technically, a vehicle must not be driven by the person who owns the vehicle without proof of ownership…which is a title in the owner’s name
How to order a duplicate (replacement) title online in Florida.
- Head on over to our homepage, select Florida as your state from our pop-up menu, and choose Replace Lost Title or Print Electronic Title.
- Answer the question: Does your name appear on the Florida DMV record as the titled owner of the vehicle? If you select “No,” you will not be able to proceed; according to the FLHSMV only legally titled vehicle owners are permitted apply for a replacement title.
- Find your vehicle in the DMV database. You will be given three criteria with which you can search. Select one option from the following list, fill in the corresponding information, and click Next..
- VIN (vehicle identification number)
- License plate number
- Title number.
- Confirm the details of your vehicle. Here you will see the year and make that corresponds to the information you entered previously. If this is correct, you can proceed. Otherwise, please return to the previous step and fix whatever is necessary.
- Enter the first and last name of the registered owner. If the vehicle is registered to a business, select “Company,” and enter the full business name.
- This is the address section.
- First, you will be asked to provide the address that the vehicle is associated with. Meaning, the address that is on file with the DMV, the same one that is found on your registration and title.
- Second, if you’d like your documents shipped to an address other than the one on file with the DMV, you have the opportunity to enter those details here by checking the box for an alternative mailing address.
If necessary, you may be asked to confirm your entered address to check for accuracy. 
- Here, you can choose your shipping method. Your choices will be:
- FedEx Overnight Rush: Delivery in one business day of document processing
- FedEx Priority: Delivery in 3-4 business days of document processing
- USPS Standard Mail: Delivery in 5-8 business days of document processing
- Provide your contact information. You will be asked to supply both an emails address and mobile phone number.
- This is your summary page. Please review your order and contact details. If anything needs correcting, you can click on “Edit Order.” If you have a second vehicle that needs a duplicate title, you can add this service now by selecting “Add Another Vehicle.” Otherwise, if everything looks good, go ahead and press “Checkout.”
- Your checkout page gives you the choice between three payment options:
- Credit card
- PayPal
- Affirm
