My mother-in-law in WA is gifting me her car and I live in CA. What forms and fees do I need to sign for transferring the title and registration? Also, I believe I’ll have to do a new smog check in CA also, right?
    Thanks for your help!

If the vehicle is in CA, you would need the original title signed off by the previous owner, REG 343 form, VIN verification by either DMV, AAA, CHP, or a licensed verifier, REG 256 form, and a smog check to complete the transfer. You can go to https://www.etags.com/app/ca#utm_source=blog_question and select Title Transfer. Once in our app, you’ll choose WA on second screen

I need to transfer my title from an Oregon title to a California title. But before that, I need to transfer the Oregon title to my name. I bought the car in Oregon and moved that very day without time to transfer the Oregon title to my name. Is there a way I can do both, transfer the Oregon title to my name and transfer it from an Oregon title to a California title?

If you have a signed OR title by the seller then you can initiate an out of state transfer in CA. You do not need to transfer the vehicle in OR first.

My husband passed away and I just discovered that the automobile I’ve been making payments on and just finished doing so is only in his name. What do I need to do to put the title in my name (same last name) and how much does it cost?

When the title is released to you from the lien holder, you will need perform a title transfer. You will need an original death certificate, a transfer without probate form REG 5 and a statement of facts for the use tax exemption. The cost for a lien release and title transfer is $15.

I am selling my car on Friday in Vacaville Ca. I will complete the pink slip portion with my info and the buyer. I will add the odometer reading and sale price. I will remove the handicap plates to turn in to DMV. How much does buyer need to pay if he paid 500.00 for the vehicle. He has to pay a vehicle transfer fee, smog transfer fee and how much are his license plates and taxes. Does this complete everything to get it out of my name. I have 5 days to get this info to you??

As a seller, you are required to submit a release of liability within 5 days of the sell. The buyer can calculate his fees at this link https://www.dmv.ca.gov/wasapp/FeeCalculatorWeb/usedVehicleForm.do

Hello Kathleen. The plates stay with the person not the vehicle. You will have to register the vehicle and get new plates from the DMV in CA.
