So, with that disclaimer stated, let’s get into it. And if you’ve read the title up top, you know we’re talking about the Apple Car Project.
What is the Apple Car Project?
The Apple Car Project, internally named “Project Titan,” was Apple’s (in case that wasn’t clear) research and development foray into autonomously driven vehicles. And while that’s not even close to exciting news for most car enthusiasts, this little endeavor – born in 2014 – danced to the tune of about $10 billion worth of funding
In general, Apple was interested in robotics and autonomous systems all around, but this particular initiative was focused on self-driving technology. In fact, Apple was so chuffed about the prospects of its AI-driven vehicles, the CEO seemingly named the venture “the mother of all AI projects.”
What happened to the Apple Car Project?
This might be a mystery. The whole scheme was shelved in 2024, with Apple pulling out of the autonomous vehicle game. However, it seems that the project was not entirely a waste. Quite the opposite in fact. So much technology was initiated during the research period…technology that is used daily amongst folks who likely haven’t a clue as to the Apple Car Project origins.
What kind of technology was born from the Apple Car Project?
Well, since the focus of the research was autonomy, here are a few bits that emerged from the abandoned project:
- Apple CarPlay
- HomePods
- Center Stage on iPads
- Daisy the recycling robot
All of these technologies are a direct result of Apple’s extensive work in those seven years of investigation and testing. Things like autonomous navigation, environmental sensing systems, the ability to measure space and adjust sound based on the area, the ability to automatically reframe a camera based on user movements, and robots with iPads on their arms who can sense and interact with their surroundings.
Will we see an Apple autonomously driven car any time soon?
The honest answer is, we don’t really know either way. For now, Apple is staying quiet in terms of the automotive world, choosing instead to focus on Apple Intelligence, meaning, non-vehicular technologies like home robotics and communication devices. And we don’t blame them – they are one of the biggest and most popular names in technology with a very, very large following. But if we had to guess, we’d say that it would not be a huge surprise altogether should this tech giant decide to once again throw their hat in the ring driverless vehicles. So basically, we’re going to keep our eyes and ears open to any potential AI-driven cars coming from the land of Apple.
