  • January 21, 2026

  • A REAL ID is a secure, government-issued driver's license or ID card marked by a star on its front.
  • As of May 2025, a REAL ID is required to board domestic flights or enter secure federal buildings.
  • While other forms of identity are accepted for entry into these secure territories (such as a US passport or military card) REAL ID offers the convenience of carrying only one document.

Greetings, friends! We wanted to address a topic that’s become more and more prevalent of late and perhaps clarify anything that might still be up in the air for some folks. Today we are going to get into the ins and outs of the REAL ID.  Ready? Here we go…

What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID replaces your standard form of government issued ID such as a driver’s license. This ID card comes as either as driver’s license or identification card. It is issued by local state government and follows a set of very strict federal safety guidelines that ensure upmost security.

What is different about a REAL ID?

There are a few aspects that set the REAL ID apart from a conventional state ID. For one, obtaining a REAL ID requires more vigorous forms of documentation. To be REAL ID eligible, you will need to provide:

  1. Proof of identity, such as a US birth certificate, US passport, or if you are not a US citizen, a Permanent Resident Card.
  2. Social Security Number. You can use your Social Security Card, a W2 form, or a work paystub or paycheck.
  3. Proof of residency. This can be proven by providing a lease agreement, deed, mortgage statement, bank statement, or a utility bill.
  4. Any documentation supporting a legal name change, such as a marriage, divorce, or name change certificate.

You will also notice a specific element on a REAL ID that does not exist on older forms of ID: the REAL ID bears a star (that can be gold or black) on the front that marks it as the new form of government ID.

Why would I need a REAL ID?

As of now, REAL ID is not mandatory for activities like driving or providing identification. That said, when it comes to travel, the TSA currently requires a REAL ID to board an airplane for domestic flights. In lieu of a REAL ID, passengers are able to show:

  • US Passport
  • US Passport card
  • Global Entry card
  • Military ID
  • Permanent resident card

For folks who don’t want to carry (or who don’t have) the alternative proofs of identity, a REAL ID is an easy fix.

Is REAL ID just for boarding domestic flights?

No. Actually, in order to enter any secure federal building, people will have to show the same officially approved proof of identity: either a REAL ID or a US passport.

How do I obtain a REAL ID?

REAL ID must be applied for in person at your local DMV. Bear in mind that you will have to bring with you the appropriate forms documentation such as proof of identity, social security and residency.

In conclusion, while a REAL ID is not mandatory, it can be a convenience document to obtain, as it can keep folks from having to worry about carrying extra forms of ID for domestic travel and entry into secure federal buildings.
