What is a Florida Specialty Plate?
A Florida Specialty Plate is a vehicle registration tag (license plate) that is different from the conventional tag you would get when registering your car, truck, or SUV for the first time in the state of Florida. These special plates, approved by Florida’s DMV (FLHSMV) feature different designs, motifs, and themes that range from sports teams, educational institutions, health awareness, military affiliation, law enforcement and first responder support, environmental preservation, animal protection, and much more. In fact, there are over one hundred different styles of Specialty Plates to choose from!
Do Specialty Plates Cost More?
Yes, but there’s a really good reason for the slightly higher fees associated with Florida Specialty Plates. You see, these tags are more than just a pretty face. Behind each design is a cause, a charity, a foundation, a purpose. Meaning, that each individual Specialty Plate is connected to an organization that does some sort of good for the community. And when you decide to go for one of these unique tags, your extra fee goes directly towards supporting the cause represented by that theme.
Take today’s Spotlight, for example: Big Brothers Big Sisters.

This plate is an excellent way to support Florida’s mentoring program, whose mission it is to have all Florida’s youth on their way to achieving the full potential. The goal of this statewide program is to help change the lives of Florida’s young people, broadening their perspectives through safe and meaningful connections with adult volunteers.
