Don’t be a victim! According to the FBI, there were 765,484 thefts of motor vehicles nationwide in 2016, which makes us believe that criminals are still operating unscrupulously.

Car thieves are smart criminals, and they keep getting smarter. They are good at spotting easy targets and many of them use technology to create counterfeit key fobs.

As local authorities strive for car theft prevention, here you’ll learn how to avoid being a victim.

Locking your car at all times

The basic rule when driving to work or any other public destination is to lock your car after parking.

But, do you lock your car after parking it at home or in your garage? If not, you are giving car thieves a welcome pass to break into your home and take possession of your car with very little complications.

The best thing you could do is to always lock your car even in public or at home. Note that those criminals are opportunists and rely on your own mistakes to steal your vehicle.

Watch out for your keys

Never forget to bring your keys with you as that is another basic rule that deters criminals from finding you an easy target.

Drivers are advised to pull their keys out of the ignition every time they get off their vehicles.

If you are one of those drivers who always keep a copy of their key below the seat or in the glove box, we suggest that you reconsider your choice as that attracts bad guys.

Be careful with your belongings

When it comes to car thieves, every little helps. If they see you have a bag of valuable items or other devices including, laptops and cameras, they’ll follow you to learn more about you.

Protect your car and your belongings. Never give a reason to those criminals to approach your car, smash the windows, and pick any of those valuable belongings you left inside.

Security has no price

Many cars have an alarm system already installed, which makes it harder for car thieves to steal your car. If your car does not have an alarm system, do not worry yet.

You could always request it as they are affordable and easy to install.

At the same time, many automakers have made it easier for car owners to track their vehicle by using their smartphone. Drivers can use those “Find my car” apps to locate and track their cars from any location.

Smart parking

Most car thieves choose their victims depending on where they park. You don’t want to be parking your car far from the rest as it increases your chances of becoming a victim.

Try to park your car in a visible spot, not far from your reach, and close to other vehicles. Car thieves are like predators who target the ones who stay far from the group.
