Given the uptick in all things electric and digital in the automotive world, it’s no shocker that screens themselves have become a much-debated subject across all sorts of drivers, from committed car enthusiasts to daily commuters to weekend errand-runners alike. Congruent with the pervasive rise of technology in general, we’ve noticed a slow but steady transition from conventional buttons and switches to digital interfaces. And like all change, this one isn’t always welcome. That said, we’re taking a look at the screens in the Lucid Air Touring, and it’s obvious that some screen can truly defy the cynicism and actually improve the driving experience.

Lucid has unveiled their “Left Cockpit Panel,” which is a strategically places screen that works wonders in the usability sector. This new addition features essential but secondary controls for mechanisms like windshield wipers, lights and brights, and defogging. It also includes some features unique to EVs, such as the charge door and frunk opening controls. Leaving no room for hesitation and no need for multiple menu pages, the layout and design are intuitive, presented with clear icons that are easily understood and literally right at your fingertips.

The real game changer of this new Left Cockpit Panel is its functionality. In most conventional vehicles, you’ll often find the area on the left of the steering wheel used as a hub for different controls. And this spot can be tricky and occasionally difficult to access since it’s sometimes not super visible without peering around the wheel. Lucid, on the other hand, incorporates a design that displays these controls in a way that is easy to see and easy to access… without making driver crank their heads or guess the function of the icons.
One minor “complaint,” if there must be one, is that this panel does not give the tactile feedback you’d find with physical buttons. But seeing as how this is an EV, not only is this to be expected, but the specific commands on this panel on ones used far less frequently than other infotainment and control features. For the number of times this panel is used, the lack of feedback is likely one EV drivers are willing to overlook. What’s more, this left screen has a certain knack for incorporating useful digital convenience without having to compromise on accessibility or safety.

What makes Lucid, well…Lucid, is their smart and strategic use of a space that is often overlooked in vehicles. And rather than filling this new screen with something big and constantly adjusted, like, say, temperature or entertainment, they’ve cleverly utilized features, that while relevant, won’t need to be addressed quite as often. It’s a thoughtful innovation that supports the balance between convenience, technology, and practicality that we think could really enhance the driving experience.
And no matter what sort of control panel is sitting to the left of your steering wheel, for all your title and tag needs, you’ve arrived in the right place.
