Lost Car Title In New York State? Get A Title Replacement Online!

  • May 30, 2023
19950 views
  • If you lost your car title in NYS, or it's damaged, you can request a duplicate title also called title replacement
  • You need Form MV-902, and NYS driver's license
  • When you request a title replacement, you must be the owner of the vehicle and have a current U.S. address
  • You can order a duplicate title online or by visiting your local NYS DMV

If you lost your NYS vehicle title, you could get a title replacement online. Same if your NY title got stolen or damaged, better to replace it fast so you have proof of ownership. A proper vehicle title is also needed for selling your car when the times comes. Without it you won’t be able to assign the car to your buyer, and in turn, they won’t be able to transfer the paperwork into their name (which they need for proof of ownership).

The New York Times, citing data from the Department of Motor Vehicles, revealed car registrations jumped 37% between August and October of 2020 in New York ( Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx)

DMV, mail, or online

There are a few ways to request a duplicate car title in New York State, including at a local DMV office and by mail. But you should know that when ordering a title replacement with the DMV, you won’t be issued the duplicate title on the spot. The vehicle titles are printed in Albany and mailed to car owners. Should you decide to mail your application and request, your paperwork goes to the Title Bureau’s PO Box in Albany, NY 12220

In Manhattan alone, new car registrations went up 76% in 2020 and in Brooklyn, registrations climbed 45%

eTags: licensed by the New York State DMV

You can skip all of that and request your NY duplicate title online. eTags walks you through a set of questions, so they can better assist you with what you need. Just state if your name appears on the New York State vehicle title, let them know the car’s VIN (number), and if you’re the registered owner too. As you complete your answers, the appropriate forms automatically fill out making it a convenient process including Form MV-902: the application for duplicate title.

Only 8.5% of households in America don’t have a vehicle

Are you the owner

When you request a title replacement, you must be the owner of the vehicle and have a current U.S. address with the DMV. The car must also be already titled in NYS and you can ask for any changes on the title like for example a change of name or address. The title must stay as is.

What would be the procedure if my name isn’t on the title?

You must contact the owner whose name appears on the title and have them request a replacement or you must have legal paperwork indicating that you are authorized by the owner to request the title. If the owner is deceased, this may be estate documents or other that have been issued by attorney’s and/or a court.

      Our condolences for your loss.

You can apply for a duplicate title in person or by mail with the NY DMV or online with eTags. You will need to provide copies of the death certificate, letters of administration, and your ID. You will be required to complete two forms, signed specifically to denote that you are the administrator of the estate.

A lost tile replacement can only be requested by the owner (name on original title). The owner can get a duplicate title online with eTags.
