Lost Your Illinois Car title? A Duplicate is Closer Than You Think!

  • February 19, 2025

  • A duplicate title service is also called a title replacement.
  • If you lost or misplaced your Illinois car title, or if it got stolen or damaged, you need a duplicate title in order to sell the vehicle in the future.
  • You won't be able to get a duplicate title within 15 days of the original one being issued or within 30 days of a previous duplicate.
  • In the US, the certificate of title is a legal document establishing a person or business as the legal owner of a vehicle.

In the state of Illinois, your vehicle title is proof of your ownership of the car, truck, SUV, or motorcycle. It’s right at the top of the list of important documents to keep track of, along with your birth certificate and social security card. So what happens if you discover that your Illinois title is lost or damaged? Well, it’s best to replace it right away. And not to worry: the process to replace your vehicle title in the Prairie State is quick and painless. Here’s how:

Use eTags© to Quickly Complete Your DMV Service. Renewals, Title Transfers and More, All Online!

VSD 190 Form for duplicate title IL
The Secretary of State in Illinois offers a few options to replace the lost title to your car, truck, RV, or motorcycle. In-person or by mail, and comes with an expedited option. To start, you need form VSD190 or the Application for vehicle transactions. The form is downloadable online. But you could always pick it up at a local SOS office. If you aren’t too computer savvy and can’t get down to your local office, you can even order one by phone at 800-252-8980.

By mail; wait 2-3 weeks
Another option is to mail in your completed form and payment for the replacement title to the Springfield SOS office. The address is:
Secretary of State
Vehicle Services Department
ERT Section, Rm. 424
501 S. Second St.
Springfield, IL. 62756

You can pay the fee by check or money order. If you’re worried about your shipment getting lost in the mail, you can always choose a tracked shipping option for peace of mind. Your title will arrive in 2-3 weeks!

A duplicate title for an all-terrain vehicle or off-highway motorcycle is $30

In-person; you won’t have title in hand
You can bring form VSD 190 down to a local office in person. If you choose this option, just remember you won’t walk out with your title. It’ll still take about 2-3 weeks to come in the mail. However, handing your form and payment over to a live person may be preferable to the mail. If you’re visiting an office, make sure to bring your driver’s license and your current registration to apply for the duplicate title.

Each time the state of Illinois gives a title to the buyer of a particular car, they keep a copy of both the old and new titles over the vehicle’s lifetime

Pro tips for quicker results
If you need your replacement title right away, here’s how to get that done:

Be sure to submit your request in person, before 12 pm, pay an extra $30 for expedited service,  and it will be ready the same or the next day! If you’d like it shipped, just a heads up: a signature will be required upon receipt.

If you happen to find yourself near the headquarters Springfield office, you can come back the next day and pick your Illinois title up. Another handy tip is you can also order by phone for the expedited title option. They’ll only accept payment by credit card but this is a rare service that isn’t usually available in other states across the US.

And there you have it: the quick and straightforward guide to obtaining a duplicate title in the state of Illinois.

      Hi Angie,
Unfortunately, eTags isn’t operating in Illinois currently. The SOS has an expedited option. I apologize for the inconvenience.

It sounds like the vehicle is still titled in Il. The SOS has a website you can visit to fill out and print the form and send your $50 by mail to receive a duplicate. I would look into this option.

Do I need to have active insurance on the vehicle to get the duplicate title? I no longer drive the vehicle nor have it in my possession. It is at a dealership awaiting the duplicate title to complete the trade in transaction.

Typically, no you don’t need insurance since title is just for ownership. If you plan to drive it, you need a registration which in turns needs insurance.

Do I need proof of ownership from the bank or lien holder when I paid the loan off more than 7 years ago and want to get a replacement title since I lost the original title sent me when I paid off the loan?

The title is your proof of ownership. If the original title was already in your name when the bank sent it to you, then no. You won’t need any lien release paperwork from the bank. If the title was never transferred to your name, then yes, you’ll need to have your bank send you an original lien release letter.
