Connecticut DMV Title Transfer Guide
How To Transfer A Car Title In Connecticut
If you have bought or sold a car in Connecticut, one of the first things you will do is a title transfer.
In Connecticut, owners of vehicles that are 20 years old and newer are required to have a certificate of title in their name. Essentially, this is a document produced by the state that serves as proof of ownership of the vehicle.
If you’ve bought a car you will want to have your name put on the title right away. And, if you’ve sold a car you will want to remove your name and replace it with the name of the new owner.
If the vehicle in question is more than 20 years old, there are no title transfer requirements in the State of Connecticut.
This guide will explain how to transfer a title in Connecticut.
CT Title Transfer If You Have Bought a Car
After you have purchased a car, you will need to get to a local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office as soon as possible to do a title transfer and register the vehicle.
If you bought the vehicle from a dealership, they will likely take care of the paperwork and submit it to the DMV for you. If you have a loan on the vehicle, the new title will have the lien holders name on it and will be mailed to the lien holder, but if you own the vehicle outright, the title will be sent to you.
If you bought the vehicle through a private party sale, you will have to be sure to gather the proper documents before you head to the DMV.
The Connecticut title transfer requirements include a Bill of Sale with the following information:
- The name and address of both the new owner and the seller.
- The Vehicle Identification Number.
- The vehicle year, make, model, and color.
- The purchase price and purchase date.
- The seller’s signature.
You must also bring the original title (no copies) and ensure it has been assigned to you on the back of the certificate.
Fill out the Connecticut Registration and Title Application form (H-13B), pay the $25 fee and you will receive the new title in the mail.
Title Transfer If You Have Sold A Car In Connecticut
If you have sold a car in Connecticut, you will want the new owner to transfer the title out of your name and into theirs. This will ensure that should something happen after they take the vehicle, that your name is not on the car.
To do this, you must provide the buyer with:
- The original title assigned to the new owner on the back of the certificate.
- Bill of Sale that includes the name and address of both you and the buyer, the Vehicle Identification Number, the purchase price and the purchase date, as well as your signature.
You must also complete the Connecticut Registration and Title Application form (H-13B) and pay the $25 title transfer fee. Your new title will be sent to the address on file with the DMV.
CT Title Transfer From A Lien Holder
If you have paid off a loan on your vehicle, you will not have to initiate the title transfer process. The State of Connecticut requires lien holders to automatically assign and mail the title to you. You can take this title to the DMV to finish the process.
In some cases, the lien holder will provide you with a lien release letter in addition to the title as evidence that you have fulfilled your loan agreement.
