Indiana Drivers License Renewal

Indiana Driver’s License Renewal Guide

Updated: July 19, 2021
As of 2019, Indiana is one of the top 15 states with uninsured drivers; about 15.8% drivers don’t have auto insurance coverage. Of the 4.5 million licensed drivers in the midwestern state that year, about 725,00 drivers were uninsured. For Indianans, driving without a license can result in a suspended license for up to one year, reinstatement fees between $250-$1000, or the need to file for a court ordered SR-22 insurance policy.  For the 1st offense, your driver’s license is suspended for at least 90 days. How to Renew an Indiana Driver’s License

What do I need and how do I renew my Indiana driver’s license? Good questions. The following guide explores how to renew an Indiana driver’s license.

Renewing a Driver’s License in Indiana

Is it time to renew your Indiana driver’s license? While the state does send out renewal notices, it is still up to you to know when your license expires so you complete your Indiana license renewal on time.

Your license expires at midnight on the day of your birthday, so make sure you have completed the process by then or you will be driving with an invalid license. There are consequences for letting your license expire.

For less than six months, you’ll have to pay a late fee, but for more than six months past expiration you will have to retake the driving knowledge test. Should you go three years past your expiration date, you’ll have to take the driving skills test again.

In Person Driver’s License Renewal

While most people in Indiana will be able to complete their Indiana license renewal online, there are circumstances that require an in-person visit to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).

Over Age 75 or Under 21

If you are over the age of 75 or under the age of 21, you will always need to renew your license in person.

Change of Information or Lawful Status

If you have had a change to your name or residential address, you must notify the BMV within thirty days. This is known as amending your license in Indiana and cannot be done online. Similarly, if you have had a change in lawful status, such as citizenship, you will have to visit the BMV office.

Required Vision Screening or Testing

As stated above, if you’ve let your license expire you will have to visit the BMV office to perform a vision test and maybe even a driving knowledge or skills test.

Excessive Points

If you’ve had some incidents and have six or more points on your record, you will have to pass the knowledge test to complete your Indiana drivers license renewal.

Suspended License

If your license is invalidated, suspended or revoked you will have to renew in person.

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or For-Hire

If you have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or a For-Hire endorsement, you can only renew in person.

Online Driver’s License Renewal

You can renew online if you meet the following conditions:

  • Name and address have not changed since your last renewal.
  • You do not required to take any tests.
  • You completed your previous renewal at a BMV branch.

If you are eligible to complete your Indiana license renewal online, you will need to provide your name, birthdate, address and Social Security number.

Required License Renewal Fees

To complete your Indiana driver’s license renewal, you are required to pay a required license renewal fee:

Required fees vary by driver age and are as follows:

  • Under 75 years old, the fee is $17.50.
  • Over 75 years old, but under 85, the fee is $11.00.
  • Over 85 years old, the fee is $7.00.

License Validation Periods

For most people, their newly renewed license will be valid for six years. Drivers over the age of 75 will have to renew again in three years and those over 85 will have to complete another Indiana drivers license renewal in two years.

Drivers who received their first license while they were under 18 years old will have to renew within thirty days of their 21st birthday.

Letting your license expire in Indiana can mean that you have to retake the knowledge or driving test. To save this hassle, make sure you know when your license expires and use this guide to know how to renew an Indiana drivers license.
