How to Renew Your Driver’s License in Arizona

In Arizona, your license is issued by the Arizona Department of Transportation. They have an online portal that you can use for many issues, but you will need to make a personal appearance when renewing your license.

However, you can save some time by downloading the application here. If you have any questions, you can always call the DOT at (602) 255-0072 or contact them by filling out the form.

Renewing or Replacing Your AZ Driver’s License

An AZ license renewal is not the same as replacing your driver’s license. You are allowed to request a replacement license online if:

  • You lost your license.
  • Want to change your address.
  • Upgrading your graduated or Under 21 license to the next level.

Arizona License Renewal Fees

If you need a replacement driver’s license in Arizona, you’ll be looking at a $12.00 renewal fee for both a standard ID or a REAL-ID. You can request a rush shipment of your renewal or replacement for an additional fee of $16.95.

You must file to renew Arizona drivers license if you have received a renewal notice in the mail or your current license is about to expire. If you are renewing your license, you will have to visit a Motor Vehicle Division office or an authorized third-party driver’s license provider in person.

Arizona Graduated Driver Licenses

If you received your driver’s license while under the age of 18, you received a graduated license. Once you turn 18, you can apply to convert your license to an Under 21 license. There are no driving restrictions for an Under 21 license.

They are simply designed for easy identification of your age. In order to convert your graduated license, you will be requesting a replacement license online–no need to visit the MVD office.

Updating Your Under 21 License to a Regular Driver’s License

Just like converting a graduated license, all you need to do to receive your regular driver’s license in Arizona is to request a replacement license through their online form and pay the fee.

AZ DMV Driver’s License Renewal Locations

The Arizona MVD has multiple locations across the state. You can find the one closest to you here. The MVD locations are typically open 9 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday and closed on holidays.

You can also go to an authorized third-party (ATP) drivers license location. Many of these locations are situated near popular shopping centers, may offer weekend and holiday hours, and can have a much shorter wait time compared to the state-run offices.

However, you will likely be charged a convenience fee for renewing at an ATP location.

License Renewal Requirements: What do I need to renew my license?

You need to bring your current unexpired Arizona drivers license with you to the office. You will also need a secondary form of identification as listed here.

Remember, you need to complete the renewal form before you arrive at the office. Once your ID is verified, they will have you complete a vision test and take a new photo.

You will receive a temporary paper license before you leave the office and the permanent license will be mailed to you within 30 days.

How Much Does it Cost to Renew Your AZ License?

The fees vary according to age. You may pay between $10 and $25. Remember, if you go to an ATP location instead of the MVD office, you may be charged an additional convenience fee.

How Often Do You Need to Renew Your License?

Arizona requires that you update your picture on your driver’s license every 12 years until you reach the age of 65. After that, you will need a new picture and vision test every 5 years.

Arizona REAL ID and Travel

Does my new AZ license meet the REAL ID requirement for travel?

Unfortunately, the Arizona drivers license does not meet the Real ID requirements and will not be accepted by commercial air carriers after October 2020. You may wish to apply for a Voluntary Travel ID from Arizona when you get your Arizona drivers license renewed. Keep in mind, by May 2023, if you plan to travel out of state, you’ll need a REAL-ID compliant driver’s license to travel by air. Without it, you may not make it past airport security.
