Tornados, hurricanes, flash floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, and more; all powerful, dangerous, and potentially deadly. Here in Florida and many other states bordering the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf Coast, we are well aware of the damage a natural disaster like a Hurricane can cause and West Coast residents are very familiar with earthquakes and wildfires. That\u2019s why over 3,000 organizations from around the country are teaming up for the 11<sup>th<\/sup> annual National Preparedness Month.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>National Preparedness Month is aimed at providing people all over the country the information they need to help them get prepared for both small and large weather anomalies. Every week during September is dedicated to a different theme:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"399\">September 1-5th<\/td>\n<td width=\"399\">Floods<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"399\">September 6-12th<\/td>\n<td width=\"399\">Wildfires<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"399\">September 13-19th<\/td>\n<td width=\"399\">Hurricanes<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"399\">September 20-26th<\/td>\n<td width=\"399\">Power Outages<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"399\">September 27-30th<\/td>\n<td width=\"399\">Get ready for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.community.fema.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National PrepareAthon!<\/a> Day (September 30th )<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Getting Prepared<\/h2>\n<h3>Assemble a survival kit<\/h3>\n<p>If you ever need to evacuate your city or region, having a disaster supply <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ready.gov\/build-a-kit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kit<\/a> ready can help ease the stress of acting when the time comes. Consisting of an assortment of essential items that your household will use\u00a0in an emergency, a disaster supply kit should be assembled with enough provisions to support your household members\u00a0for at least 3 days. Emergency help may take that long to arrive if the damages to the area are severe. These kit should include things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Food<\/strong> \u2013 non-perishable items like canned foods, dry mixes, and other staples that contain high liquid contents and\u00a0are not overly salinized<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water<\/strong> \u2013 one gallon per day for each member of the home\u00a0remembering that the supply will be used for consumption, sanitation and possibly medical needs<\/li>\n<li><strong>First Aid Kit<\/strong> \u2013 multi-sized bandages, compress dressings, cloth tape, antibiotic ointment, antiseptic wipes, gauze, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/prepare\/location\/home-family\/get-kit\/anatomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Electronics<\/strong> \u2013 flashlights and batteries, battery-powered or hand-cranked radio, and a cell phone with charger, inverter, or solar charger<\/li>\n<li><strong>Old school items<\/strong> \u2013 U.S. paper map, matches or lighters, manual can\u00a0opener, wrench or pliers, moist towelettes, garbage bags<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s important that your kit gets built well in advance, so you don\u2019t have to scramble to gather your supplies last minute. Keeping the survival kit in a cooled area of your home is what is recommended. Putting together a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/what-i-live-for-national-safety-month\/\">kit for your car<\/a> is also advised.<\/p>\n<h3>Construct a plan<\/h3>\n<p>Before disaster hits, make sure you and your family have a plan. Trying to figure out what to do <em>during<\/em> an emergency may compromise the effectiveness and fluidity of your safety plan. By having a well-practiced plan, you\u2019ll be prepared when you need to be.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Designate a safe place where members of your family can meet (local school, church, neighbor\u2019s house, etc).<\/li>\n<li>Make sure everyone knows how to get to the\u00a0designated spot. Draw up a map and photocopy it for everyone.<\/li>\n<li>Take your family through several practice drills, so that everyone becomes familiar with it.<\/li>\n<li>Create a pocket-sized sheet of emergency numbers and addresses that can be stored in each family members wallet or purse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Stay Informed<\/h3>\n<p>One of the biggest mistakes that an individual can make is believing that a disaster won\u2019t happen or that it &#8220;won\u2019t be that bad\u201d. No matter where you reside, you need to be prepared and stay informed. Some of the ways you can stay informed are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/com\/weatherreadynation\/wea.html#.Vdj4fCVViko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WEA messages<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; In the event of a local emergency, government authorized safety agencies will send out a text message alerting residents of the impending threat. Most devices are already programmed to receive these alerts and, while not recommended, you can contact your carrier to opt out or change the type of alerts received.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disaster alert apps<\/strong> \u2013 Yes, there is an app for that. Available for both <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/search?q=disaster%20alert&amp;c=apps&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Android<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/disaster-alert-pacific-disaster\/id381289235\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iOS<\/a> a disaster alert app will allow you to search for occurring disasters by location, receive global or localized alert disasters and more.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emergency Management\/Services offices<\/strong> \u2013 Contacting or visiting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fema.gov\/emergency-management-agencies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">your state\u2019s emergency management agency<\/a> will help you in obtaining information on available shelters, evacuation orders, and more.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The News<\/strong> \u2013 You can stay update on what\u2019s going on in your area and around the world through newspapers, radio, TV, and of course, the World Wide Web. Facebook can do a nice job of passing around natural disaster news as we recently witnessed here in Florida with (ex)Tropical Storm Erika.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Driving in a Disaster<\/h3>\n<p>In the event that you and your family must quickly evacuate the city, it\u2019s important to stay calm and follow these tips when driving in the following conditions:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hurricanes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not attempt to evacuate once the hurricane has arrived<\/li>\n<li>Do not try and drive on flooded roads or highways<\/li>\n<li>Avoid traveling on coastal and low-lying roads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Flood<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not try and drive on flooded roads or highways<\/li>\n<li>If you are caught in deep water, get out of the vehicle<\/li>\n<li>If you leave your vehicle, head to higher ground<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Wildfire<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Evacuate early following local fire department warnings<\/li>\n<li>Avoid closed-in, box canyons as safety areas<\/li>\n<li>Know where and how the fire is spreading by staying informed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most importantly, always have your evacuation route planned ahead of time.
