Smog testing is a prerequisite to registration renewal for most vehicles in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, every rule has a few exceptions. So, can you renew a registration without a smog check in California? Sometimes. But in order to do so, you need to meet a few key criteria. In this article, we\u2019ll walk you through the situations in which a smog test isn\u2019t required. We\u2019ll also explore some California smog testing basics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#what-is-smog-check-program-3379\">What is the Smog Check Program?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#vehicles-not-requiring-smog-test-3379\">Which Vehicles Do Not Require Smog Testing?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#vehicle-does-not-meet-smog-requirements-3379\">What Happens If Your Vehicle Does Not Meet Emissions Requirements?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#renew-car-registration-without-smog-3379\">Can You Renew a Car Registration Without Smog Testing?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"what-is-smog-check-program-3379\"><strong>What is the Smog Check Program?<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>The Smog Check Program is a statewide program administered by the California Department of Consumer Affairs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bar.ca.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bureau of Automotive Repair<\/a> (BAR). The program inspects the emissions of most road-legal vehicles in the state in an effort to minimize pollution.<\/p>\n<p>These tests are carried out at independent, licensed service stations throughout California. Some stations are entirely dedicated to smog testing, while others provide mechanical services in addition to emissions tests. There are more than 7,000 certified smog-testing stations in the state.<\/p>\n<p>To have your vehicle tested, you will have to pay a small fee to the service station. This fee varies, as pricing is determined by individual providers. However, all smog-testing stations will charge an $8.25 certificate service fee which goes directly to the state as funding for the program.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting that a smog test cannot be performed on a car with a brand-new battery. If you recently replaced your battery, the car must be driven several hundred miles before it can produce an accurate emissions sample.<\/p>\n<div id=\"vehicles-not-requiring-smog-test-3379\"><strong>Which Vehicles Do Not Require Smog Testing?<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>California recognizes that not every vehicle is capable of meeting emissions testing requirements, no matter what sort of repairs are made, and that not every citizen can afford an emissions-compliant car to replace their old one.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As a compromise, California lawmakers have declared that the following vehicles do not require emissions testing:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Gasoline-powered vehicles built during or before 1975<\/li>\n<li>Diesel vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVWR) of 14,000 lbs. or more, built during or before 1997<\/li>\n<li>Vehicles powered by natural gas with a gross vehicle weight of 14,000 lbs. or more<\/li>\n<li>Motorcycles<\/li>\n<li>Electric vehicles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"vehicle-does-not-meet-smog-requirements-3379\"><strong>What Happens If Your Vehicle Does Not Meet Emissions Requirements?<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>If your car does not meet mandatory emissions standards, you will be asked to make it compliant. Meaning, you will be given the specific reasons for the emissions failure and then the pertinent repairs that will allow the vehicle to pass the test. After doing seeing to the repairs, you can re-test your vehicle. Once it passes the smog check, it will be certified compliant, and you can proceed to renew your car registration.<\/p>\n<div id=\"renew-car-registration-without-smog-3379\"><strong>Can You Renew a Car Registration Without Smog Testing?<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>This is one of the most frequently asked questions regarding vehicles in the state of California, and the answer is a bit more complex than a simple yes or no. If your vehicle fits into any of the exemption categories listed in the previous section, you don\u2019t need a smog check. If your vehicle doesn\u2019t fit into those categories, then you do.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, you can still start your California registration renewal either online or in person even if your vehicle has not been inspected or has failed its smog check test. This allows you to avoid any associated fees for late renewal. That said, you will not receive your actual renewed registration or your updated sticker until the DMV has received your smog check verification.
