Volkswagen’s beloved SUV, the Atlas,<\/a> is all set to undergo a metamorphosis for next year. Since its reveal back in 2017, this three-row SUV has been central to VW\u2019s offerings. But in spite of having experienced two rounds of improvements so far, the push for something truly fresh was obvious. Thus, VW is about to unleash an all-new Atlas for 2027. And we’re going to suss out as much as we can about it.<\/p>\n

Design<\/b><\/p>\n

The recognizable, squared-off form of the Atlas refelcts its practical nature, this feature is sticking around for the new model. That said, it seems that just about everything else – \u00a0aside from the roof – will be new. Some speculate that the 2027 Atlas will closely remind of the VW Teramont Pro, which is available in international markets. Built on the MQB Evo platform, a blueprint that makes sure the Atlas continues to be tough, durable, and versatile.<\/p>\n

Engine<\/b><\/p>\n

Volkswagen is fitting out the new Atlas with the EA888 Evo5 engine. In VW’s popular Tiguan, this engine provides 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Translating this to accommodate for the Atlas\u2019s larger size, we imagine that VW will adjust the necessary elements for tip-top performance.<\/p>\n

Though a hybrid variation won’t yet be available at the Atlas’ launch, fans of this model looking to buy the 2027 version are hoping that at some point VW will produce a hybrid option…sometime in the near future. With the ever-expanding interest amongst car buyers towards hybrid and electric powertrains, it\u2019s a niche that VW is quite likely fulfill in order to stay current and competitive.<\/p>\n

Interior<\/b><\/p>\n

Considering the inside of the Atlas, it seems that this SUV is due to undergo an interior makeover as well. Taking into account the critique that some earlier models faced for their touch-based controls – which drivers found a bit taxing – fans of the Atlas are looking forward to a more intuitive, user-friendly interface that spotlights ease and satisfaction.<\/p>\n

Market<\/b><\/p>\n

Regardless of the a slip in sales that VW experienced in 2025 – accounting for a 13% drop compared to the previous year – the Atlas holds its place as a notable model. Despite the dip in 2025, the SUV sold 71,044 units, which is only one spot behind the Tiguan on VW\u2019s roster. However, taking into account the significant competition from the likes of the Hyundai Palisade and the new Kia Telluride – and the ever-present rivals such as Toyota and Honda – an upgraded Atlas is a must if VW is to hold onto its standing in the three-row crossover SUV segment.<\/p>\n

Volkswagen has plans to reveal the new Atlas in April of next year at the New York Auto Show, and is expected to open sales to the public by late summer 2027. This schedule allows for VW to make an impression in the crowded three-row marketplace.
