Today we\u2019re going to give you a quick rundown on how to get your driver\u2019s license if you\u2019ve just moved to Florida. But before we begin, it\u2019s important to note that as a recent transplant to the Sunshine State, the law requires you to obtain a new driver\u2019s license within 30 days of establishing residency. And we\u2019ll start with the residency aspect first!<\/p>\n

First, you must be considered a resident of Florida before applying for a driver\u2019s license. Here are several forms of Residency<\/strong> you can provide to the DMV:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Proof of local employment in a trade profession, or occupation<\/li>\n
  2. Proof that you\u2019ve lived in Florida for more than six consecutive months<\/li>\n
  3. Proof that your children are enrolled in state public schools<\/li>\n
  4. Proof of voter registration in Florida<\/li>\n
  5. Proof of homestead or property tax exemption filing<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Next, it\u2019s time to gather the necessary documents. First up is Identification<\/strong>. If you are a U.S. citizen, acceptable form of Primary<\/u> <\/em>ID are:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Birth certificate<\/li>\n
    2. Passport or passport card<\/li>\n
    3. Consular report of birth abroad<\/li>\n
    4. Certificate of naturalization<\/li>\n
    5. Certificate of citizenship<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \"FL<\/p>\n

      Secondary<\/u><\/em> ID forms can be:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Social Security Card<\/li>\n
      2. W-2 Form<\/li>\n
      3. Pay stub<\/li>\n
      4. SSA-1099 or any 1099<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        You will also need to have Proof of Address<\/strong>. You can provide one of the following:<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Deed, mortgage, or lease<\/li>\n
        2. Florida voter registration card<\/li>\n
        3. Home or auto insurance bill<\/li>\n
        4. W-2 or pay stub<\/li>\n
        5. Bank statements<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Once you\u2019ve got all these in order, you\u2019re ready to make the appointment with the DMV to get your new Florida driver\u2019s license! These spots can fill up fast, so it\u2019s a good idea to make this appointment as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

          At the DMV office you can expect the following to occur:<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. A vision test<\/li>\n
          2. A new photo taken<\/li>\n
          3. Your old driver\u2019s license surrendered<\/li>\n
          4. Fees paid<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            After the above tasks are completed, you may be given a temporary license that will be valid for thirty days while you await your actual driver\u2019s license card. The new card will usually arrive via mail within the month.<\/p>\n

            \"FL<\/p>\n

            Now, if you\u2019re also planning on transferring your title and registration to Florida (which is a requirement that must be done within ten (10) days of establishing residency,) your next step is to make sure you\u2019ve got your Out-of-State Title and Registration<\/strong> on hand. If you\u2019ve lost your title, or if it\u2019s been stolen or damaged, you will need to contact your previous state\u2019s DMV and order a duplicate\/replacement document.<\/p>\n

            For out-of-state titles with active liens: <\/strong>In the case of an active lien \u2013 meaning, the financial institution has possession of the title \u2013 you will need to contact the bank\/lender and have them send the title to the FLHSMV.<\/a> This is a common practice that lienholders are quite familiar with \u2013 no need to worry!<\/p>\n

            For vehicles with liens, you may proceed with your title as follows:<\/p>\n

            Insurance<\/strong>. You will need to show proof of valid, local Florida insurance in order to register your vehicle.<\/p>\n
