Tire Safety Week takes place every year between May and June\u00a0but tire safety should be on every driver\u2019s mind year-round. There are several guides around the web that tell you exactly what to look for from companies like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michelinman.com\/US\/en\/safe-driving\/tire-safety.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michelin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodyear.com\/en-US\/tire-guide\/tire-care\/maintenance-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GoodYear<\/a> and government agencies like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/cars\/rules\/TireSafety\/ridesonit\/takeone.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHTSA<\/a>. Here are a few tips from the pros on what to look for:<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Tire Replacements, Rotation, and Mixing<\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to rotating or changing out your tires, there are important safety and performance factors to consider. Should you rotate your tires or replace a pair or all? If you replace 2 tires, should the new set go in the front or back? Focusing on this particular question, they fine people at Michelin put together this great video:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u><strong>2 Tire Replacements<\/strong> \u2013<\/u> If you are replacing only two tires on your four-wheeled vehicle, make sure the new tires go on the back. In adverse road conditions (rain or snow for example), you will be better able to control the car if you lose traction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><u><strong>Tire Size<\/strong> \u2013<\/u> Whether you are replacing only 2 tires or all 4, make sure that they are within the size range of the recommendations provided by the car manufacturer. You can find this information in the owner\u2019s manual or on the driver\u2019s side door.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><u><strong>Tire Rotation<\/strong> &#8211;<\/u> It is recommended that tires be rotated every 5-7 thousand miles or when you detect notable wear to the tread. You\u2019ll need to check your car manufacturer\u2019s recommendations for frequency and best pattern for rotation. For some vehicles, the rear and front tires are not the same size, so rotating the tires may not be possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><u><strong>Balance and Alignment<\/strong> \u2013<\/u> It is important to perform regular tire balancing and wheel alignment in order to avoid vibrating or shaking and extend the life of your tires. Align and \/or balance your tires based on the manufacturer\u2019s recommendations or when you feel the car veering to one side or shaking especially at higher speeds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Tire Pressure<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Why It\u2019s Important \u2013<\/u> Making sure your tire\u2019s are properly inflated is important because it means you will experience better handling, dependable traction and a more comfortable ride.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><u>What to look for \u2013 <\/u>Based on the PSI listed in your vehicle owner\u2019s manual or in the sticker affixed on the driver-side door, assure that the PSI levels are within the manufacturer recommended range.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><u>How to test it \u2013 <\/u>Using a tire gauge (digital, pencil, or dial style), check your tire\u2019s pressure when they are cold or when the car has not been driven for at least 3 hours. Insert the gauge into the valve of each tire.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><u>When to fix it &#8211; <\/u>If your tire pressure is above or below that recommended by your cars manufacture, then you must either let some air out or add air\u00a0with the proper tire inflation device that you own or one from an auto shop or gas station.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Tire Tread<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Why It\u2019s Important \u2013<\/u> Your tire\u2019s tread, the part of the rubber that has direct contact with the road, provide grip and traction for different road conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><u>What to look for \u2013 <\/u>With a tread inspection, you are looking for areas where the treadwear indictors are visible or shallow areas where the tread is worn past a certain point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><u>How to test it \u2013 <\/u>You can take your car into a shop where they can assess whether or not the tires need replacing but you can also do what\u2019s called a \u201cpenny test\u201d right at home. Take a penny and place the part of Lincoln\u2019s head in each grove. If you can see the top of Lincoln\u2019s head, your tread is worn down to 2\/32 of an inch (not good).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><u>When to fix it \u2013 <\/u>It is recommended that tires be rotated every 5-7 thousand miles to promote even wear. If your tires inside or outside tread is worn down to 2\/32 or worse, you need to replace your tires.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember, it&#8217;s Tire Safety Week so there is no better time to make sure your tires are as safe as possible to transport you, your family, and your friends. Also, remember that being #TireWise is only one part of the safety equation.
