The Golden State is home to some of the nation\u2019s most rigorous and limiting environmental rules and regulations. Some of these laws include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Environmental Quality Act<\/li>\n<li>Sustainable Communities and Climate Protection Act<\/li>\n<li>Stricter standards for the Clean Air Act<\/li>\n<li>Rigid building codes for energy efficiency<\/li>\n<li>Hazardous material labeling<\/li>\n<li>Energy-saving appliance regulations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In fact, California has proven to be so environmentally aware and so proactive about implementing planet-saving laws, that their high standards and processes have been known to spread to other states across the country.\u00a0 This influence and its impact have, over the years, been coined the \u201cCalifornia Effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>One by one, states throughout the U.S have looked to the west coast to see how their environmental development is progressing.<\/h2>\n<p>Some territories follow suit, while others hardly absorb much influence at all. But either way, California has probably left more of a stamp on the automotive industry than any other state in the country.\u00a0 Nowhere has this approach to remediating the negative of effects of pollution been put more to practice than in California.<\/p>\n<p>And as we are obsessed with all things automotive here at eTags, we thought it would be helpful to explore some of California\u2019s trail-blazing Acts and Laws.\u00a0 Because whether you\u2019re already a Golden State resident or perhaps are planning on moving to the left side of the U.S., it\u2019s important to know what will be expected of you as a driver and vehicle owner.<\/p>\n<p>California has a brand-new regulation called the Advanced Clean Cars II.\u00a0 This law will require all new passenger cars, trucks, and SUV\u2019s sold in the state to be fully electric, producing zero emissions, by the year 2035.\u00a0 The first year this lofty goal will begin to be marked is 2026.\u00a0 The state hopes to see steady turnover in the progression from gas-fueled vehicles to non-gas. This means, that 100% of all vehicles \u2013 including plug-in hybrid cars \u2013 must produce zero emissions.\u00a0 The penalty for the sale of a non-compliant car, truck, or SUV is said to be $20,000 per violation.\u00a0 Clearly, this regulation means business.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-24323 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_302683883-1-800x316.jpeg\" alt=\"Charging an EV\" width=\"800\" height=\"316\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_302683883-1-800x316.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_302683883-1-1160x458.jpeg 1160w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_302683883-1-1536x607.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_302683883-1-2048x809.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_302683883-1-120x47.jpeg 120w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_302683883-1-90x36.jpeg 90w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_302683883-1-320x126.jpeg 320w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_302683883-1-560x221.jpeg 560w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_302683883-1-1920x759.jpeg 1920w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_302683883-1-scaled.jpeg 780w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/316;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But before we even get to that point in the near future, today\u2019s emissions testing in California is <em>not <\/em>messing around.\u00a0 With one of the strictest programs in the U.S., the Smog check \u2013 as it is called locally \u2013 is a make or break for vehicle owners.\u00a0 Not only must your car pass inspection every other years, but failure to either obtain a passing emissions test or driving with a failed test can cost you anywhere from $250 all the way up to a whopping $1000 in administrative fines.\u00a0Smog checks are also a prerequisite for registration.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If your car, truck, or SUV has not passed its emissions test, in cannot be registered or have its registration renewed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Simply put, in order to drive, you\u2019ve gotta get that Smog check done and dusted.<\/p>\n<p>In general, California\u2019s emission standards are much higher than the rest of the country. That being said, if your vehicle qualifies for it, there is the option of applying for Clean Air Vehicle decal and identification card. If you are eligible for this decal, it will authorize you to drive in HOV lanes, allow you move toll-free or at reduced-rates on certain bridges.\u00a0 This applies even if you are a solo driver.\u00a0 So while it might be a trifle challenging to qualify for the decal, it\u2019s certainly worth the effort.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond passenger cars, trucks, and SUV\u2019s California is home to the Advanced Clean Fleet (ACF) rule.\u00a0 Pertaining to medium and heavy-duty truck fleets of fifty or more, this act requires fleet owners to continuously meet a minimum requirement, and purchase an increasing percentage of zero-emissions trucks.\u00a0 And not only are private companies responsible to abide by this, but short-distance, state, and local government public fleets as well.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-24326 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_915772942-1-800x448.jpeg\" alt=\"Fleet of trucks\" width=\"800\" height=\"448\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_915772942-1-800x448.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_915772942-1-1160x650.jpeg 1160w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_915772942-1-1536x861.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_915772942-1-2048x1148.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_915772942-1-120x67.jpeg 120w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_915772942-1-90x50.jpeg 90w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_915772942-1-320x179.jpeg 320w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_915772942-1-560x314.jpeg 560w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_915772942-1-1920x1076.jpeg 1920w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/AdobeStock_915772942-1-scaled.jpeg 780w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/448;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not leaving anything to chance, California goes a step (or several steps) beyond relying on drivers and vehicle owners to comply with their strict emissions requirements.\u00a0 On top of all the rules and regulations that apply to the layperson, the Golden State has something called the Zero Emissions Vehicle Program.<\/p>\n<h2>But aren\u2019t all these laws we just listed referring to zero emissions, you might ask?<\/h2>\n<p>Well, yes, they are. But what the above points have in common is that they are (with the exception of the Advanced Clean Cars II) reliant on the consumer to be environmentally aware and cooperative.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.ca.gov\/news\/2024-05\/zero-emission-vehicle-sales-remain-strong-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zero Emissions Vehicle Program<\/a>, (ZEV) on the other hand, is focused solely on the manufacturer.\u00a0 This regulation requires all large and medium-scale vehicle manufacturers to supply the state of California with a certain percentage of all sales made up by zero emissions vehicles. And it seems like all sides of this story are participating in California\u2019s laws.\u00a0 In just the first few months of 2024, there were 102,506 zero emissions vehicles sold.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And the Golden State shows no signs of letting up on their hero\u2019s journey to a zero emissions future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In April of 2024, California was given permission by a federal court to continue to set stricter emission standards than those of the EPA and the rest of the country.\u00a0 And given this boon, we don\u2019t see the left coast leaving anything to chance.<\/p>\n<p>So if you\u2019re a CA resident, it rather behooves you to ensure that your vehicle is Smog-tested and passed, and if you\u2019re in the market for a new ride, consider that down the line, and EV will likely become the standard requirement for all residents.\u00a0 But no matter what sort of vehicle you are driving now or in the future, one thing remains a constant: here at <a href=\"http:\/\/etags.com\">eTags<\/a> we are ready to get you titled, registered, and\/or renewed.\u00a0 Because as always, we\u2019re here to help!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone knows about California and its environmental consciousness, right?\u00a0 Well, in case you didn\u2019t, here\u2019s a quick recap.
