{"id":24294,"date":"2024-08-27T10:00:16","date_gmt":"2024-08-27T10:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/?p=24294"},"modified":"2024-08-27T07:40:07","modified_gmt":"2024-08-27T07:40:07","slug":"riding-with-ease-the-rise-of-automatic-transmissions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/riding-with-ease-the-rise-of-automatic-transmissions\/","title":{"rendered":"Riding with Ease: The Rise of Automatic Transmissions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greetings and salutations, friends.\u00a0 In today\u2019s episode (er, post) we veer a bit away from things modern, progressive, and innovative to focus on a bit of automotive history.\u00a0 Because, in truth, it is the <em>history<\/em> of automobiles itself that leads to and therefore allows for current day innovations.\u00a0 To fully understand where we are in the world of cars, trucks, and SUV\u2019s, sometimes it\u2019s both necessary and nice to take a peek back into our roots.\u00a0 Which is precisely what we will do in this article.<\/p>\n<h2>Buckle up, kids. Time for a history lesson!<\/h2>\n<p>Today we dive into the beginnings of the automatic transmission.\u00a0 But to put into perspective what an advancement the automatic transmission was, we first need to take a look at what came first.\u00a0 It was, of course, preceded by the manual transmission. The very first motor vehicles came with only one option called a rear-engine setup. These cars were manufactured with one gear, and no ability to shift to a higher or lower speed.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in the late 1800\u2019s, two French innovators \u2013 Louis-Rene Panhard and Emile Levassor \u2013 introduced the first multi-gear transmission. The vehicles bearing this new system (which was patented in 1894) sported a \u201csliding mesh\u201d design, a three-speed gear box that required the driver to switch gears manually.\u00a0 This system, however, allowed the shifting between gears and speeds.<\/p>\n<p>Since this advent of this first multi-gear system, manual transmissions have undergone a massive development.\u00a0 From a single speed to a triple gear box, manual transmissions have evolved to the option of seven gears.\u00a0 In the year 2012, it was the luxury, performance vehicle manufacturer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.porsche.com\/usa\/atyourservice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche,<\/a> who introduced the seventh gear.\u00a0 And we have a feeling more may yet be rolled out in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-24298 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_532366902-1-800x534.jpeg\" alt=\"Manual gear shift\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_532366902-1-800x534.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_532366902-1-1160x774.jpeg 1160w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_532366902-1-1536x1025.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_532366902-1-2048x1367.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_532366902-1-120x80.jpeg 120w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_532366902-1-90x60.jpeg 90w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_532366902-1-320x214.jpeg 320w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_532366902-1-560x374.jpeg 560w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_532366902-1-1920x1282.jpeg 1920w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_532366902-1-scaled.jpeg 780w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/534;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, why would anyone want to improve on a transmission that could ostensibly get you from 0 to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds? (We\u2019re looking at you, Aston Martin!) If you\u2019re in it for speed and acceleration, manual is the way to go, undoubtedly.\u00a0 But what about the folks who don\u2019t go by the nickname \u201cSpeed Demon?\u201d What about the people who don\u2019t want to constantly be shifting gears or switching between the two left pedals?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There is a lot to be said about the ease of driving a vehicle with an automatic transmission.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In general, these cars are much simpler to use.\u00a0 Automatic cars sense the change in speed and the gears shift for you, thereby freeing up the mental and physical space of having to implement and adjust manually. They also are not likely to stall or roll down hills on their own the way manual transmission tend to do with novice drivers.\u00a0 In short, automatic transmissions are simpler to learn and to operate.<\/p>\n<p>But when did our inventors and innovators realize this fact? Surprisingly early, actually. By 1923, he had patented his design, and by 1937 General Motors was using Munro\u2019s air pressure transmission for all of their Oldsmobile, Buick, and Cadillac model cars. The drawback to using compressed air, however, was that it lacked the power that drivers and engineers were craving.\u00a0 Improvements were yet to be made.<\/p>\n<p>In and around the same time period, two Brazilian engineers \u2013 Fernando Lehly Lemos and Jos\u00e9 Braz Araripe \u2013 clearly recognized the need for speed (long before Top Gun was even a twinkle in anyone\u2019s eye) and invented the first hydraulic transmission in 1932. The American bigwigs at General Motors of course swept in and purchased the rights to this invention, eventually developing the Hydra-Matic transmission. This transmission was produced at a mass level by 1940, and largely supplied the tanks used during World War Two.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Oldsmobile adopted the Hydra-Matic transmission in 1940, Cadillac got on board in 1941, and Pontiac joined the cool kids club in 1948.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And yet, the general public was skeptical.\u00a0 Drivers were accustomed to the manual shifting of gears and could see no dire need to fork over the extra money for the cost of something that seemed unnecessary.\u00a0 In fact, GM resorted to a massive advertising campaign in order to convince folks of the benefits of opting for an automatic transmission.\u00a0 Over 1947 and 1948 they rolled out a promotional video that showed in theaters across the country.\u00a0 This commercial featured an all-new 1948 Oldsmobile Futuramic with its Hydra-Matic transmission, proclaiming the car as \u201cDriving Magic.\u201d \u00a0And it seems that they must have been met with some success, as Oldsmobile rolled out a whopping 65, 235 vehicles that year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-24301 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_290983196_Editorial_Use_Only-1-800x519.jpeg\" alt=\"1948 Oldsmobile Futuramic\" width=\"800\" height=\"519\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_290983196_Editorial_Use_Only-1-800x519.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_290983196_Editorial_Use_Only-1-1160x752.jpeg 1160w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_290983196_Editorial_Use_Only-1-1536x996.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_290983196_Editorial_Use_Only-1-2048x1328.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_290983196_Editorial_Use_Only-1-120x78.jpeg 120w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_290983196_Editorial_Use_Only-1-90x58.jpeg 90w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_290983196_Editorial_Use_Only-1-320x208.jpeg 320w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_290983196_Editorial_Use_Only-1-560x363.jpeg 560w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_290983196_Editorial_Use_Only-1-1920x1245.jpeg 1920w, https:\/\/www.etags.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AdobeStock_290983196_Editorial_Use_Only-1-scaled.jpeg 780w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/519;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These days, people need a lot less convincing to opt for an automatic transmission. In the past few years, automatic cars account for about 99% of all vehicles on the road in the United States. That number shifts a bit depending on rural versus urban areas, but the highest numbers we\u2019ve seen in manual transmission sales is only about 1.7%.<\/p>\n<h2>Clearly, the Hydra-Matic was a dazzling success.<\/h2>\n<p>From humble beginnings in the early 1930\u2019s to millions and millions of models manufactured and purchased since, we\u2019d say the automatic transmission has really taken off.\u00a0 Or accelerated, if you will.
