The state of Florida introduced license plates in 1906.\u00a0First, crafted out of dark leather and metal lettering. Only 174 vehicles were registered at the time, most powered by steam.\u00a0The Florida Legislature launched the state’s first uniform license plate in 1917.\u00a0By 1980, specialty license plates began to pop out. By 2003, the \u201cCHALLENGER\u201d license plate<\/a> commemorating the space shuttle explosion that killed seven astronauts at Cape Canaveral had raised $28 million.<\/p>\n

After the FL DMV introduced the \u201cCHALLENGER\u201d tag in 1987, the \u201cSAVE THE MANATEE\u201d license plate in 1990, and the \u201cPROTECT THE PANTHER\u201d tag in 1991, they collectively raised more than $100 million by 2005. Today, the \u201cENDLESS SUMMER\u201d plate is the Sunshine State’s most popular specialty license plate. Since 2010, it has raised more than $2 million each year for the Surfing’s Evolution & Preservation Foundation, which supports the health of the state’s beaches.<\/p>\n

Florida drivers love endless summers<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As of September 2023, there are 2,093,001 specialty plates registrations in the Sunshine State. The most popular one? \u201cENDLESS SUMMER,\u201d with 131,587 license plates on the road. Followed by \u201cHELPING SEA TURTLES SURVIVE,\u201d and \u201cUNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA\u201d with 92,559 tags.<\/p>\n
