If you’ve recently lost a loved one, the last thing you want to be bothered with is mountains of paperwork and technicalities surrounding the transfer of a vehicle.\u00a0 But often enough, the passing of a family member or close friend can leave you with an inheritance – a car – that needs to be transferred. If there\u2019s no beneficiary or living spouse in the will, the deceased estate will undergo probate (legal process). The probate process allows for the distribution of assets and property.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In the case of a title transfer in Connecticut, the car\u2019s title can\u2019t be transferred until probate is completed. If you\u2019re the administrator or executor of the deceased person\u2019s estate, contact your local probate court or an attorney to find out more about next steps.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Title Transfer of Deceased Person Documentation<\/span><\/strong>
To transfer a vehicle title from a deceased person in Connecticut, there are several pieces of documentation needed:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

1. The title:<\/strong> must be assigned to the new owner\u00a0by the Executor or the Administrator of the estate.\u00a0If the vehicle is registered in Connecticut but doesn\u2019t require a title, a\u00a0Supplemental Assignment Of Ownership form Q-1 needs to be completed + recent registration card<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

2. Probate Court<\/strong> original order<\/strong> for proof or transfer: The vehicle buyer needs a certified copy of the probate document\u00a0naming the Administrator\/Executor of the estate for when they register the car<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

3. Death Certificate<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

4. Odometer disclosure statement: <\/strong>For proof of accurate mileage on the odometer at the time the car transfers from the seller to the purchaser

Acceptable probate documents for car title transfers include<\/strong>:<\/span>
1. PC-160 Decree
2. PC-212B Petitioner’s Probate Certificate
3. PC-260 Decree Granting Administration of Probate of Will
4. PC-264 or PC-264S Decree\/Transfer of Personal Property Without Probate\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
5. PC-450 Fiduciary’s Probate Certificate<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

For registration, the estate is the seller, and you are the Purchaser<\/span><\/strong>
To register the vehicle after title transfer, you must apply for Registration and Title or Form H-13B. If the vehicle was registered under a family member\u2019s name for at least two months, then the new buyer won\u2019t have to pay sales tax on the vehicle. Car buyer will also need to prove they have current Connecticut insurance and driver\u2019s license. If the vehicle hasn\u2019t gone through emissions testing, you can still register it, but you must get the inspection done within 30 days of registration.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
