Electric vehicles today are making headlines, across multiple industries and circles. From politics, to technology, automotive sales, and more, EVs are even creating policies for the future. Some countries were early adopters of battery electric vehicles, with a big part of their licensed drivers population registering EVs<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

For example, according to the IEA, the U.S. had 0.57 million PHEVs in 2019. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are cars with internal combustion engine and a battery charged via external socket (the plug). In 2020, America had 1.1 million BEVs100% \u2014 battery electric vehicles. China had 3.5 million BEVs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Sales of electric cars topped 2.1 million globally in 2019, accounting for only 2.6% of worldwide car sales<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

4.79 million electric vehicles and counting<\/span><\/strong>
Worldwide in 2019, there were 4.79 million battery electric vehicles (BEV). Zero-emission vehicles mandates, fuel economy standards, and more efficient batteries are all areas of great significance and research. Norway recently became the first country in the world where the sale of electric cars surpassed those powered by gas, diesel and hybrid engines in 2020. Battery electric vehicles made up 54.3% of all new cars sold.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The latest innovation surrounding EVs<\/span><\/strong>
One of the latest areas of research is wireless electric vehicle charging. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is now testing EV charging that\u2019s embedded in highway pavement, so that electric vehicles can charge as they drive (or when parked). German company Magment created magnetic concrete or cement that can be used on highways, parking lots, and other roadways.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In 2020, electric car registrations increased in major markets in despite Covid-19<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

INDOT is testing this research through a three-phased pilot project alongside Purdue University, and Magment. The charge-while-you-drive testing will take place on a quarter-mile stretch of road fitted with the wireless EV charging system. Heavy trucks will be tested at 200-killowatts-and-more.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Wireless EV charging while you drive<\/span><\/strong>
The Magment technology works via coils embedded in slabs of magnetized cement. For electric vehicles to charge wirelessly through the pavement, they\u2019ll need a similar coil fitted in their base, which will then connect to whatever their onboard charging system is. So the charge can transfer between the ground coil and the onboard coil rapidly, whether the EV is stationary over the Magment pad or not.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Last year, Europe had the largest annual increase of EVs with 3.2\u00a0million units<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Indiana not first to try wireless EV charging<\/span><\/strong>
In 2017, telecommunications firm Qualcomm\u00a0worked on a technology they called Halo Dynamic Electric Vehicle Charging (DEVC) for EV charging via pads embedded on the road. The EV just drover over these pads for a quick and wireless boost of battery power. DEVC was tested in Paris with a Renaut Kangoo car.

ElectReon, a tech startup, also worked on a wireless EV charging system using copper coils fitted under asphalt to enable electric vehicles to charge their batteries wirelessly while on the move (driving). The wireless charging system can connect to existing power grids so no added infrastructure or transformation stations needed. The technology uses management units to communicate with vehicle receivers and transfer energy. This year, ElectReon tested the wireless EV charging in Sweden with an electric long-haul truck, proving snow and ice is not a problem. The tech startup also deployed the technology in Tel Aviv, Israel.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The UK more than doubled new electric vehicle registrations to reach 176\u00a0000 last year<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Electric vehicles in numbers<\/span><\/strong>
According to IEA, about 3\u00a0million new electric cars were registered worldwide in 2020. Europe led with 1.4 million new EV registrations. China had 1.2 million registrations, while the U.S. registered\u00a0295\u00a0000 new electric cars. Germany registered 395\u00a0000\u00a0new electric cars and France registered 185\u00a0000.
