And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea\u201d
The first verse of the song \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d<\/em>

The writer of \u201cAmerica the Beautiful,\u201d Katherine Lee Bates, was describing the view from Pikes Peak as she wrote the song in 1893.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Bates was on a road trip with a group of teachers according to\u00a0Ballad of America<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The group used a wagon pulled by horses to get near the top of 14,115-feet-high Pikes Peak and then used mules to get to the very top.

In the 21st century, people take road trips via automobiles rather than horses, but the beauty of the United States is still captivating.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In fact, a road trip to Pikes Peak, which is about 12 miles west of Colorado Springs, and other parts of the Mountain West can be even more scenic and unspoiled than it was in 1893.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

And that is the consequence of America’s remarkable decision to preserve their precious land as national parks.

In 1893, there were three national parks — Yellowstone (Wyo., Mont., Idaho), Sequoia (Calif.), and Yosemite (Calif.). Today, there are\u00a061 parks.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

National parks really are, as the documentary by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan said,\u00a0\u201cAmerica\u2019s Best Idea.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Of the 61 parks, 17 are in the eight Mountain West states — Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.

How many of the 17 national parks in the Mountain West you should visit on a road trip depends on how much time you have.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Frankly, you should take several road trips to the different national parks the country has to offer, but for the purpose of this article, we’ll assume that you have enough time to go on a road trip to the four states in the Mountain West, which meet at one point called the Four Corners — Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah —\u00a0<\/strong>and you are driving westward from the East, South, or Midwest.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

With that being said, let’s visit the following US national parks on a road trip that exudes charm and entertainment.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

#1 Carlsbad Caverns<\/a><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Carlsbad Caverns is the only national park in New Mexico. Carlsbad Caverns has great sites above and below the ground.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

You can see deep rocky canyons and high ancient sea ledges as well as cactus and desert wildlife above the ground.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Below the ground are 119 caves of all sizes. A cave called the Big Room is the fifth largest cave in North America.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It\u2019s about 4,000 feet long, 625 feet wide, and as high as 255 feet.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

#2 The Grand Canyon<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

PLEASE don\u2019t emulate Thelma and Louise\u2019s road trip. They missed so much by ending it early!!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Driving west from New Mexico to Arizona, the Grand Canyon National Park is on many lists of the seven\u00a0Wonders of the World<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This article<\/a>\u00a0recommends doing more than viewing the Grand Canyon via the viewpoints for visitors.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

You should, instead, walk on a hiking trail that traces the canyon\u2019s rim and descends into its depths.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

#3 Monument Valley<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Heading north from the Grand Canyon, you should think about seeing all those picturesque mountains and valleys you saw in so many Western movies by visiting Monument Valley, which is on the Arizona-Utah border.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Monument Valley is NOT an American national park because it\u2019s part of the Navajo Nation but it\u2019s on many travelers\u2019 lists of great national parks.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Movie director John Ford used Monument Valley repeatedly in his movies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

So if you want to emulate Ford\u2019s favorite actor, John Wayne, and ride a horse in the valley, go ahead. They\u2019re available.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

#4 Bryce Canyon<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Only Alaska and California have more national parks than Utah, which has five.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

You can drive about 280 miles northwest from Monument Valley to Bryce Canyon National Park.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Bryce Canyon has the largest concentration of hoodoos in the world. \u2018What did he or she just write?\u2019 you\u2019re thinking.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Hoodoos are irregular columns of rocks. Trust us when we say you want to take photos of these rock formations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

#5 Zion<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Zion National Park is only about 70 miles from Bryce Canyon, mostly west, but that\u2019s not why you should go there.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This southwest Utah park features red cliffs and emerald pools that contain \u201cmesmerizing blue waterfalls and lush hanging gardens,\u201d reports\u00a0this Trek America article<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The park also has more than 300 species of birds, mammals, and reptiles.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

#6 Arches<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Heading about 300 miles northeast, yes you\u2019re still in Utah, you will see Arches National Park. Canyonlands National Park is nearby.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

On a long road trip, you should visit both. We chose Arches over Canyonlands because it is more accessible, but you can take great photographs at either park.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Arches has more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches. You can see many of them up close via your car and\/or your feet.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

#7 Grand Sand Dunes<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

From Arches National Park, drive about 300 miles southeast to Grand Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Here\u2019s how\u00a0this article<\/a>\u00a0on national parks describes the park — \u201cDiscover towering sand dunes, similar to what you might expect to find in the Sahara Desert, in the middle of Colorado \u2014 along with snow-covered mountains and prairie-like grasslands.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

#8 Rocky Mountain Park<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It\u2019s about a 300-mile northbound road trip from Grand Sand Dunes to Rocky Mountain National Park, which is also in Colorado.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The views described in \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d were from Pikes Peak, but it\u2019s common for people planning a road trip in Colorado to ask whether they should visit Pikes Peak or Rocky Mountain National Park.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Yet tourists’ consensus is to visit the park.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Yes, Rocky Mountain National Park is more scenic, according to many travelers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It has 60 mountains that are at least 12,000 feet high.

Before you visit these spectacular sites, please make sure you don\u2019t make the mistake Chevy Chase\u2019s character made in the movie \u201cNational Lampoon\u2019s Vacation\u201d — not checking to see when the attraction is open.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

So check the schedules, make sure the kids have something to do in the car, figure out your expenses, treat the dog right, and have a great time!!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
