If you don&#8217;t know how to register a vehicle in California, you\u2019ve come to the right place.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Vehicles New to California<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The registration process for people who have recently moved to California and for people who purchased a vehicle out of state is handled in the same manner. People new to California are required to register their motor vehicle within 20 days of being granted residency. To register your vehicle, you will need to take the following documents to your local Florida DMV <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dmv.com\/ca\/california\/dmv-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">office<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For privately owned vehicles, a completed Application for Title or Registration <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/wcm\/connect\/8c4e5fdb-a44e-44f6-853b-eabd471afdaa\/reg343.pdf?MOD=AJPERES&amp;amp;CONVERT_TO=url&amp;amp;CACHEID=8c4e5fdb-a44e-44f6-853b-eabd471afdaa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the signatures of every owner of the vehicle in addition to any lienholder related information <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For commercial vehicles, a completed Declaration of Gross Vehicle Weight\/Combined Gross Vehicle Weight <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/wcm\/connect\/4ee70a0f-2e2c-4382-8d83-37e7deea09ae\/reg4008.pdf?MOD=AJPERES\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is needed. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For trailers, a completed Permanent Trailer Identification (PTI) Application Certification <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/wcm\/connect\/366ec173-9da5-4e7d-a4ea-fcaa6bdd04b5\/reg4017.pdf?MOD=AJPERES\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is needed. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proof of insurance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out-of-state title (for people who are transferring their vehicle title to California)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out-of-state registration<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If necessary, weight certification<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smog and emissions certification<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All vehicles new to California must have a smog check unless the vehicle is 6 years old or less<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payment for the registration fees<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Vehicles Purchased from a Dealership<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, when a person purchases a vehicle from a dealership, the dealership will not only complete all the necessary paperwork, they\u2019ll also issue the buyer a temporary registration. The temporary license should be kept in your vehicle until your official one arrives in the mail. If your documents never arrive in the mail, contact your local California DMV office. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Vehicles Purchased from a Private Third-Party<\/strong> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residents in the state of California will have 10 days to register a vehicle when they purchase it from a private third-party. Once this 10 day period has pass, residents will be issued a fine. In order to register your vehicle, you will need to have the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vehicle title or an Application for Duplicate or Paperless Title <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/wcm\/connect\/7885d40d-4d2e-4fc0-b100-3ef8fe562bd7\/reg227.pdf?MOD=AJPERES\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if the title is not available <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he odometer mileage written on the vehicle title or application (for vehicles 10 years or younger) <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice of Title Transfer and Release of Liability <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smogtips.com\/reg138.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> completed by the seller (no later than 5 days after the date of sale, the seller must report the change of ownership and registration of the motor vehicle to the Florida DMV)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smog and emissions certificate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the vehicle being sold is over 4 years old, the person selling is responsible supplying the buyer with a valid smog certificate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certificates are valid 90 days after the official inspection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the vehicle\u2019s registration was renewed within 90 days from when the vehicle was sold and the registration was renewed biannually by the prior owner, a smog certificate is not required. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A completed Application for Title or Registration <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/wcm\/connect\/8c4e5fdb-a44e-44f6-853b-eabd471afdaa\/reg343.pdf?MOD=AJPERES&amp;amp;CONVERT_TO=url&amp;amp;CACHEID=8c4e5fdb-a44e-44f6-853b-eabd471afdaa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">form<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Bill of Sale <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smogtips.com\/billofsale.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (both the seller and the buyer must fill this form out)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payment for the registration fees <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To register your vehicle, you can take the items listed above to your local California <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dmv.com\/ca\/california\/dmv-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DMV office<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/dmv\/detail\/portal\/foa\/welcome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make an appointment online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or you can call (800) 777-0133. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Registration Fees<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All motor vehicles must pay a registration fee and a $23 California Highway Patrol fee.
