Learn all the facts and necessary links with this quick FAQ.<\/p>\n<h2>How To Transfer A Vehicle Title In California<\/h2>\n<p>When the title is transferred to you or to the buyer of your car, it must be taken to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/dmv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0Department of Motor Vehicles<\/a>\u00a0in order to get new plates and a registration.<\/p>\n<p>Check out their website for a complete list of DMV\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/dmv\/dmv\/offices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">locations and times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>What Is A Title?<\/h3>\n<p>Your car title is the official proof of vehicle ownership.<\/p>\n<p>It describes the vehicle using the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Year of manufacture.<\/li>\n<li>Make, model, and trim level (ex: Ford Taurus LX).<\/li>\n<li>Type of vehicle (Sedan, SUV, pickup, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>The Vehicle Identification Number.<\/li>\n<li>Its weight.<\/li>\n<li>Number of passengers.<\/li>\n<li>New, used, or salvage condition.<\/li>\n<li>Odometer reading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It will then list the owner of the vehicle and their address.\u00a0 It will have additional areas for the personal information of the buyer.<\/p>\n<h3>How to Transfer a Title in California<\/h3>\n<p>When a vehicle is sold or simply transferred, the old title must be signed over by the original title holder and filled out according to law.\u00a0 It is then signed by the buyer.\u00a0 If the seller has a loan on the vehicle, the bank must also sign the title recognizing the sale and release their responsibility to the vehicle. If the buyer will be using a loan, their bank also must sign it.<\/p>\n<p>The title is then taken to the DMV where the clerk will enter the change of ownership into the database and create a new title. If there is a loan on the car, the title is sent to the bank until the loan is satisfied. If the car was paid for in full, the new title stays with the new owner. Once an updated title is issued and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/dmv\/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:\/dmv_content_en\/dmv\/pubs\/brochures\/fast_facts\/ffvr34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">all fees are paid<\/a>, the car can be registered.<\/p>\n<h3>Title Transfer When There Is A Lien Holder<\/h3>\n<p>What is a lien holder? The lien holder is able to repossess the car if you fail to meet the requirements of the loan.<\/p>\n<p>In many ways, the lien holder is the legal owner of the car until you pay off the loan.<\/p>\n<h3>The Odometer Reading Must Be Accurate<\/h3>\n<p>Whether you are just signing over the car to your teenager or selling it, make sure that the odometer reading listed on the title is 100% accurate.
